England World Cup squad date set

Wednesday 30 April 2014

England manager Roy Hodgson has announced that he will name his England squad on May 12th from Vauxhall HQ in Luton, Sky Sports has reported.

Hodgson had already stated that he plans to announce a 23 man squad rather than a preliminary 30, instead informing the last seven they are on a ‘stand by’ status rather than putting them through heartache of missing out.

While competition continues as the season reaches its conclusion, Hodgson has previously indicated that he may already know who he wants to take and who is set to miss out.

Sky Sports previously reported quotes from Hodgson talking to FIFA’s official website, where he said: “I've had a very clear idea of what I want to do with this squad for a long, long time. Certainly over the last couple of weeks I'm pretty much sure of what I want to do when it comes to the team.

“Nothing that happens in the last four games, in terms of form, is going to affect me. I don't judge players on their last-minute form over two or three games. I'm judging them over two years.

"If anyone new on the scene has emerged I'm judging him over several months. I'm not going to make decisions in the last week or two of the season, which is a notoriously bad time to judge talent.”

There are already two players who will miss out through injury, with Jay Rodriguez and Theo Walcott continuing to recover from serious injuries, while some players are struggling to prove their fitness.

Andros Townsend, Phil Jagileka and Jack Wilshere are among the names who could well miss out as they battle to overcome injury problems and prove their worth before the end of the season.
