Arsenal's Walcott could miss start of next season

Arsenal could be without Theo Walcott for the start of next season, although the England forward has said his recovery is going to plan, ESPN has reported.

Theo Walcott

Walcott ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during Arsenal’s FA Cup third round win over Tottenham Hotspur in January and was ruled out for the rest of the season and the World Cup as a result.

The 25-year-old has said that while he wants to return as soon as possible, he knows he can’t risk causing further damage to the injury by taking on too much too soon. “I want to be back quickly, of course - but safely, too,” Walcott said.

“I want to try and be back for the early part of next season. That is the goal, so there will be a lot of hard work throughout the summer and during the World Cup. It has nearly been four months now, and my recovery has been on track so far. At the moment I'm working on muscle strength and building muscle in my quad.”

Walcott added that he hasn’t found motivation a problem during his time on the sidelines, and hopes a meeting with a specialist in the near future will bring good news. “I don't see any point in being down in the dumps about the injury because it has already happened - and there are a lot of people with worse problems in the world,” the former Southampton player continued.

“I see the consultant soon, and hopefully he will give me the thumbs up to push on. I would love to be running in a few weeks.”

Walcott had made 18 appearances this season for the Gunners prior to his injury, scoring six goals. He also played three times for England, netting in August’s 3-2 friendly win over Scotland.
