Tottenham winger Andros Townsend now looks likely to miss the World Cup in Brazil this summer, according to BBC Sport.

Andros Townsend

The 22-year-old appeared as a late sub for Spurs during their 1-0 win over Stoke recently, but left the stadium wearing a protective boot amid fears he had sustained a potentially serious injury. The midfielder is set to undergo surgery on Thursday after being diagnosed with damaged ligaments, and is now set to miss up to 10 weeks of action – a timescale which covers the majority of the World Cup schedule.

The news comes only hours after it was reported that Roy Hodgson will name his 23-man World Cup squad on 12th May, with final squad to be confirmed on 2nd June.

Townsend made his England debut in October, and marked the occasion with a goal as England cruised past Montenegro 4-1 at Wembley, and has continued to impress in the Premier League despite not starting a Premier League game since the 1-0 defeat to local rivals Arsenal in March.
