Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has challenged midfielder Yacouba Sylla to force his way into the Villan’s and insisted the Frenchman still has a future at the club, according to Sky Sports.

Yacouba Sylla

Sylla stated earlier this month that he wants to return to France on a loan deal next season after struggling to find appearances in the claret and blue shirt, last featuring in the 4-1 home loss to Stoke City in March. He has not started for the Midlands club since December.

Lambert insists he understands Sylla’s frustration, but wishes the player had not voiced his concerns publically. The former Norwich boss now wants the 23-year-old to play his way back into the side, stating that it is a good thing that Sylla is disappointed at not playing.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Lambert said: “I understand people's frustration at not playing. I think that's normal at any football club. You wouldn't expect people to want to sit there and not play.

“I think that's normal so you're glad in that respect. Should he have spoken out? Probably not, but that comes with experience and I'm glad he's feeling disappointed at not playing. The three lads in the middle of the pitch have been playing really well for us so Yak's got to do his utmost to get into the side.

“He's got a chance here. He's got to try and force his way into the side.”

Sylla joined Villa from Clermont Foot in January 2013, but is yet to secure an extended run in the first team. He has made four appearances for Mali, having represented France at U-21 level on one occasion.
