Baines: Man Utd an unwanted distraction

Everton defender Leighton Baines has admitted that Manchester United’s efforts to secure his signature has been an unwanted distraction, Sky Sports reports.

In the summer, former Everton boss and now ex-United boss, David Moyes attempted to lure the English defender to Old Trafford.

Despite having an excellent season for the Toffees under Roberto Martinez, the 29-year-old admitted that the whole ordeal was very distracting and stressful.

"It was a bit of a stressful time because you're not sure what way it's going to go," said Baines.

"You just try to conduct yourself in the proper manner as much as you can. I had those conversations myself. I didn't have someone in there for me feeding back.

"I guess you never know if you're doing the right thing or not but at the time, it's not your decision as a player to make those calls."

Everton are currently in a race for fourth place and the final Champions League spot with Arsenal and need a win against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Despite suggestions that Everton will not want to give local rivals Liverpool a helping hand towards the Premier League title, Baines insisted the side are aiming to win the game.

"Loads of people have mentioned the scenario (of helping Liverpool) but we want to win the game, pure and simple," Baines added.

"You understand the fans' side of the rivalry but you shouldn't judge yourself on others' success or failure.

"Liverpool not winning the league doesn't make us any better."
