Magath hoping to guide Fulham back to Premier League

Fulham manager Felix Magath has said that he would like to guide the club back to the Premier League next season, the Guardian has reported, after their relegation was confirmed with a 4-1 defeat at Stoke City.

In an abject performance, the second-from-bottom club found themselves behind at half time thanks to Peter Odemwingie’s close range finish after Stephen Ireland’s shot had been deflected into his path.

Stoke were highly effective on the counter attack in the second period, with Marko Arnautovic, Oussama Assaidi and Jonathan Walters capitalising on over-committing from the Cottagers, whose consolation came from Kieran Richardson.

The relegation ended 13 years in the top-flight for the West London club, after a season which has seen the club have three permanent managers and undergo a change of ownership, with Shahid Khan taking over from Mohamed Al Fayed last summer.

Despite the prospect of Championship football ahead, Magath is hoping to lead Fulham back to the first tier. He said: "We have to talk about our situation. When I signed it was clear we had to change something. The club was at the bottom of the table and things developed in the last weeks, but it was not enough.

"It is one of the worst days I ever had. I will speak to the owner and we can start to come back. I want that chance. You can imagine this is one of the worst days I have ever had. I was very confident that we could avoid relegation, until today. I was convinced that we would have a great chance to avoid it."
