Swansea City are set to reward former captain Garry Monk for keeping the club in the Premier League by handing him a two-year contract to become manager on a permanent basis, according to the South Wales Evening Post.

Monk has been in the role of interim manager since the beginning of February, following the departure of Michael Laudrup. Handed the task of keeping the Swans in the top-flight, he has managed to achieve that with two games to spare.

The Swansea board and chairman Huw Jenkins have rarely commented on the long-term managerial situation at the club, but they are thought to have decided to hand the reins to Monk permanently during a board meeting on Friday.

In his programme notes for Saturday’s final home game of the season against Southampton, Jenkins suggested that Monk would be given the job. He said: “Making a managerial change mid-season is always a tough call,” he wrote.

“The challenge of keeping the squad united as one and fully behind the new manager is hard to achieve. Garry Monk and his staff may be inexperienced in some people’s eyes, but they have all worked extremely hard to adapt and refocus the whole squad.

“They have helped the team regain belief and confidence which should provide everyone with renewed enthusiasm for next season.’
