Cardiff City captain Steven Caulker could leave the club this summer after it was revealed that he has a relegation release clause in his contract, according to the Daily Express.

The same also goes for defensive midfielder Gary Medel, Cardiff’s other major signing upon their promotion to the Premier League. With their relegation after only one season having been confirmed on Saturday, the duo are set to be the subject of interest from clubs in the top-flight.

England international defender Caulker suggested after the defeat at Newcastle United that he would stay and try and help the Bluebirds back to the Premier League, but the release clause in the contract he signed upon joining means that may not be the case.

Caulker is reported to be a target for Liverpool, who have struggled defensively at times this season, while a return to former club Tottenham has not been ruled out. Southampton are another team rumoured to have an interest in the 22-year-old.

With Medel set to captain Chile at the World Cup, he is the one seen as more likely to leave. Of the club’s record signing, former Cardiff player Kevin Ratcliffe said: "He's captain of his country playing in the World Cup in Brazil this summer. Would you want to come back to play in the Championship after that?"
