Arsenal nearly signed Chelsea star Hazard
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that his club were on the verge of signing Belgian star Eden Hazard before his move to league rivals Chelsea, the Daily Mail is reporting.
Wenger, who’s own contract is up at the end of the season, even had the winger’s agent at his home discussing terms of the potential deal when Chelsea made their swoop which ultimately landed the former Lille man.
And the Arsenal boss has said that it was the financial power of their West London rivals that prevailed in the battle for this year’s PFA Young Player of the Year’s signature.
Wenger said: “Yes, I wanted to take him, I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn't make.
“He can be one of the players who grows into the Messi, Ronaldo stature if he continues to develop well.”
Hazard moved to Chelsea for a reported £32m after a fine last season in France, scoring 21 goals in 48 games, while also winning the league and cup double during his time at Lille.
He has already made 110 appearances for the Blues, scoring 30 goals to date and becoming one of their most important players, with his performances landing him in the PFA Team of the Year two years running.
