Man City to fight Financial Fair Play punishment

Manchester City are expected to fight their punishment for breaching UEFA’s regulations over Financial Fair Play, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

City are said to be facing a £50m fine and a reduction in the size of squad they’re allowed to name for next season’s Champions League. Manuel Pellegrini’s side will be limited to 21 players, rather than 25, it is claimed.

The punishment has been handed down by UEFA’s Financial Control Body but City are understood to be gearing up to fight the decision. City can negotiate a settlement with UEFA, with Friday the deadline, but they’re not thought to be close to an agreement.

Nine clubs across Europe are to be sanctioned, including Paris Saint-Germain, but City are the only club not to be near a settlement. Should a settlement not be reached, the case will go to an adjudication panel, who could impose a sterner sanction.

City would be able to take that to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and City argue they made an effort to comply with regulations and should be granted some leniency with that in mind. City would also have to include eight home-grown players in their European squad.

Premier League clubs could challenge City’s punishment if they feel City should be banned from the competition, but only if a club has been directly affected - such as Everton, who will finish the season one place outside the Champions League qualification zone.
