Sunderland vs West Brom - Premier League preview and team news

Sunderland can ensure another season of Premier League football and condemn Norwich City to relegation if they defeat West Bromwich Albion.

Indeed, such is the superiority of their goal difference, a draw would effectively keep the Black Cats up, a feat which seemed almost impossible just mere weeks ago. Gustavo Poyet’s decision to bring back Connor Wickham from his loan spell has turned out to be a masterstroke, but it was Sebastian Larsson who got the winner as Sunderland deservedly won away to defending champions Manchester United.

Despite Sunday’s narrow reverse to Arsenal, West Brom are already assured of their safety, due to having a far superior goal difference to that of Norwich, meaning that Pepe Mel has achieved what he was brought in to do. But still, his future remains uncertain, so the performance here and in the final game of the season against Stoke City could determine whether he stays or goes.

Ki Sung-Yueng, Carlos Cuellar and Steven Fletcher will not play again this season for Sunderland due to injury, along with goalkeeper Kieren Westwood.

West Brom are without injured quartet Billy Jones, Liam Ridgewell, Zoltan Gera and Thievy Bifouma. Steven Reid is also a doubt with a groin problem.
