Everton utility player Bryan Oviedo has said that teammate Ross Barkley deserves to be named in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup, Goal.com is reporting.

Ross Barkley

Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson names the 23 players who will go to Brazil on Monday, with Barkley widely expected to be among them after a series of impressive performances for Everton this season, during which he has made a significant breakthrough.

The central midfielder, who already has three senior England caps to his name, has scored seven goals in 38 appearances this season, and Oviedo is confident that he will get the nod from Hodgson.

"I hope he gets in. He is working for that and we saw in the last game against Manchester City, he had a fantastic game. It would be good for him to go to the World Cup for the experience and because he is a very good player.

"To have a player like him is very good for England because sometimes you need a player who can come on and win games. I think Ross is a player like that. Maybe he can sit on the bench and then come on and score a goal to win the game. He can make a difference."

Oviedo himself is facing a race against time to be fit for the tournament, having not played since suffering a double leg fracture in Everton’s FA Cup win at Stevenage in January. Should he make it, then he could come up against Barkley in the colours of Costa Rica, who England face in the final round of Group D matches.
