Arsenal trio named in Germany World Cup squad
Three Arsenal players have been named in Germany’s 30-man preliminary squad for the World Cup, Sky Sports has reported - Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podalski.
The trio are joined by Andre Schurrle of Chelsea, the only other Premier League player in the group, although Shkrodan Mustafi, now at Fiorentina but briefly an Everton player, is also called-up.
Coach Joachim Low has said he is happy with the players named and believes that the number of foreign-based players involved, and the sprinkling of teenagers, means the squad is well-balanced. “Many players are used to high-pressure situations from playing in the Champions League, they can live with it,” Low said.
“Our foreign-based players also profit from establishing themselves abroad,” he added. “That brings them further on a sporting level. Generally we have a good mix in the squad.”
The deadline for the preliminary squad is May 13, with the final 23-man party for Brazil decided no later than June 2.
Mertesacker has been at Arsenal the longest, moving to the Emirates Stadium from Werder Bremen in 2011. Podolski signed on a year later after leaving Koln, while Ozil made the switch last summer for a club record fee after Real Madrid allowed the playmaker to leave.
