Liverpool vs Newcastle - Premier League preview and team news

Liverpool must win against Newcastle United and hope West Ham can pull off a major shock at Manchester City if they are claim their first title of the Premier League era.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has already conceded the championship to Man City, after they amazingly let a three-goal lead slip at Crystal Palace on Monday when they appeared to be cruising to an easy three points.

In spite of that disappointment and the criticism which followed, it has been a marvellous campaign at Anfield, as they were given little chance of finishing in the top four at the beginning, let alone making a sustained title challenge.

Had the Reds gone into this match topping the table, they may have seen Newcastle as the perfect opponents, although they did stop the rot and ease some of the tension on Tyneside with an eventually comprehensive win over bottom club Cardiff City. That did not stop some of the supporters from continuing their protests against manager and owner, but a top half finish is definitely an improvement on last season.

Daniel Sturridge came through the game at Crystal Palace unscathed and could start for Liverpool. Philippe Coutinho could return after being dropped to the bench, while Jordan Henderson is back from suspension.

Newcastle are without Papiss Cisse and Gabriel Obertan, who both have knee injuries. Davide Santon also misses out, but with a hamstring problem.
