Southampton vs Man Utd - Premier League preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Friday 09 May 2014

Ryan Giggs ends his brief tenure as interim manager of Manchester United at Southampton, with the prospect of the club missing out on European football next season altogether looking extremely likely.

What a season it has been for Southampton. If they win this, they will finish just five points shy of their opponents, which underlines the progress that has been made under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino, as well as the extent of Man Utd’s decline. They even managed to come away with a victory at Swansea City last time out with a bizarre late goal, enhancing their impressive away record.

The Old Trafford supporters did at least have something to cheer in the final home game, with youngster James Wilson netting twice in a comfortable win over Hull City. On the whole, it is a season that they will want to forget in a hurry, and the new manager will need to initiate a radical overhaul of the squad. Victory here, and a defeat for Tottenham will see the Red Devils grab the final Europa League place.

Gaston Ramirez, Jay Rodriguez and Maya Yoshida continue to be out for Southampton, while Steven Davis joins them on the injury list.

The visitors could opt with youngsters Wilson and Tom Lawrence once again, but Robin van Persie may be handed his first start since March.
