Martinez: Tottenham rumours a compliment
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said speculation linking him with a switch to Tottenham Hotspur speak to how well the Toffees have done this year, Sky Sports has reported.
Martinez left Wigan Athletic last summer to replace David Moyes at Goodison Park when Moyes moved on to Manchester United. In his first season on Merseyside Martinez has taken Everton to fifth place and two wins over Moyes’ United, including Everton’s first win at Old Trafford in 20 years.
Tim Sherwood is currently in situ at Tottenham, having replaced Andre Villas-Boas in December, but it is expected the former Blackburn Rovers midfielder will leave the club at the end of the season.
Martinez’s name was mentioned in connection with the post in the Press this week and when asked about the gossip, Martinez responded that it was a positive. “It is a little bit as I always answer - any sort of speculation we take as a real footballing compliment,” he said.
“This is the time you are going to get rumours, with talk about new squads and the next moves,” the Spaniard added.
“From our point of view, it means we have done something right - that, as a football team, we are performing well. That affects players, members of staff and managers. We take it in a positive manner and just carry on working hard.”
