Everton manager Roberto Martinez has welcomed the Football Association’s proposal to create a League 3 stocked with 10 B teams representing Premier League clubs, Everton’s official website has reported.

The plan was this week laid out by FA chairman Greg Dyke and not greeted with universal enthusiasm. But Martinez has said he sees the plan as a good thing and a step forward for the development of players.

“I know there is going to be a lot of talk about it but I think it is very positive,” Martinez said. “First and foremost, we need to be aware that there is a big problem in the development of our youngsters in the age group from 18 to 23. They haven’t played enough competitive football and that’s a reality.

“The Premier League have been working really hard to find a solution and now the FA have come up with something that I think is very exciting,” Martinez continued. “I know that the B sides work if they are worked at properly. I know that there are other proposals but I would be in favour of having B teams because we would all get the benefits.”

Martinez argued that the negative reception for the plan was to be expected given it entails a substantial change to English football. “When you change something in football you often get a reaction which is uncomfortable and negative, which is natural. But we need to look at the problem here, which is that young English players not getting enough period of development,” he said.

“They are in a disadvantageous position with other youngsters around Europe and that needs to be solved. I know that there are a lot of aspects that need to be tweaked but what the FA did allows people to talk about it.”

Martinez is in his first year at Goodison Park and has turned to youth team product Ross Barkley on a regular basis. The likes of Tyias Browning, Luke Garbutt and Ryan Ledson have all also been involved in Martinez’s teams.
