Santos star Damiao's availability puts Tottenham, Arsenal and Southampton on alert

Long-term Tottenham target Leandro Damiao has reportedly been made available for transfer after being offered to Porto and Atletico Madrid this summer, which has also put Premier League rivals Arsenal and Southampton on alert, according to The Express.

The player was reportedly being courted by the White Hart Lane outfit for the past two summers, but made a £15m move to Santos as the Brazil striker preferred to remain in his homeland rather than move to Europe.

The move, however, has not worked out quite as well as planned, with Damiao being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad and the 24-year-old is now looking at other options – and Spurs are thought to want to convince the player that his future lies in the Premier League.

Arsenal and Southampton are also monitoring the situation, but the transfer could prove a costly one as the player’s sporting rights are owned by a third-party company, investment group Doyen – and so any English club hoping to sign the star must buy him outright.

Such costs and complications could yet prove a stumbling block at this stage, though other European nations have more relaxed rules regarding third party ownership, and so a move to Spain or Italy may prove much smoother should the player choose to move across the Atlantic.

That won’t stop the English clubs keeping tabs on the player, however, and should costs prove reasonable enough then a stint in the Premier League could yet lie in Damiao’s future.
