Manuel Pellegrini has claimed his Manchester City side deserve to win the title this year - believing they have been the best team this season, as he ramps up the pressure on title rivals Liverpool, the Daily Star is reporting.

City only need a point to finally wrap up the title in what has been a thrilling season, and has firmly claimed that his side have produced the best football over the course of the year.

When asked this Pellegrini responded: “Yes, I think so. When I arrived here, my target was always to play well and try to win the title. We have played the best football.”

Pellegrini has also lauded his side’s mentality after they coped with numerous injury concerns throughout the season.

While the likes of Alvaro Negredo and David Silva have missed parts of the season, in particular the absence of free scoring Argentine Sergio Aguero threatened to hamper City’s season - he has scored 17 goals in 22 appearances.

And he has questioned whether his title rivals could have coped without such an impact player themselves should injury have struck throughout the course of the season.

Pellegrini added: “I don't want to compare other teams, but I think maybe we were without (Sergio) Aguero, he missed 14 or 15 games in the Premier League.

“Maybe some other teams, if you take Luis Suarez out of 15 games for Liverpool, Eden Hazard from Chelsea or Santi Cazorla from Arsenal (they might not have been able to cope).
