Rodgers eyes star quality for Liverpool

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is aiming to sign ‘starters’ when the transfer window re opens aiming to build on the huge success Liverpool have enjoyed this year, the Telegraph is reporting.

Rodgers believes that his club face a crucial summer if they are to use this year’s title challenge as a platform for better things.

Last summer Liverpool’s transfers left a huge outlay, yet many of them have failed to command a regular starting spot throughout the season.

Only Simon Mignolet has held down a berth in the first XI, with Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure drifting in and out of the squad - Spanish duo Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto have barely seen first team football this season.

And the Northern Irishman believes that they should take a leaf out of Manchester City’s book.

Rodgers said: “The players we brought in last summer were young players and players to cover.

“This season we need to bring in starters. One of the things watching the Manchester City game the other night is they are bringing on Jovetic who scores the goal (£23-24 million), Fernandinho (£29 million) and Negredo (£20 million).

“That level of player to bring into the game is massive for you and I think this year the reality is we’ve been unable to do that.”

It is thought that Liverpool will give their manager a large war chest this summer as they prepare for life fighting in the Champions League again as well as the Premier League.

They have already been linked with the likes of Adam Lallana, Steven Caulker and Michel Vorm, and while Rodgers has taken note from City, he is realistic about Liverpool’s spending power in comparison to the big boys.

Rodgers added: “Listen, we are shopping at a different shop to Manchester City and Chelsea but we will get players in that I think can improve us.

“I think we are a real attractive proposition to players through Europe. We are right on the football map now but we have got work to do.”
