Lambert: Aston Villa need reinforcements

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has admitted that the club could be relegated next season unless they invest heavily in the squad, the Daily Express has reported.

It still remains to be seen whether owner Randy Lerner will decide to sell the club this summer, but Lambert has urged the American to open his cheque book after not being given considerable funds during his first two seasons in charge.

The club have struggled over the last two seasons, and only secured their safety this time around on the penultimate weekend with a 3-1 victory over Hull City, and Lambert has been forced to admit that relegation could be a possibility next season if significant signings are not made.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s final Premier League game of the season against Tottenham, he said: "I speak to Randy on a regular basis, he has always been as straight as a dye with me, and I think he knows the squad needs investment.

"He's not naive enough to sit there and think 'we've been fine down at that bottom end for the last few years. If it goes on like this, then it will catch you at one point. Nobody wants to be in that position.

"Four years it's been like this. To compete at that top end, you have to invest. Aston Villa should be up there with Tottenham and Everton."
