Aston Villa are set to be put up for sale with owner Randy Lerner having released a statement on Monday confirming his decision to end his association with the club, BBC Sport is reporting.

In a statement on the club’s official website, Lerner said: ‘Above all, the debt I owe Aston Villa whether as owner, Chairman, custodian or simply as a fan is to put the Club first. To make good on that debt, I owe it to Villa to move on, and look for fresh, invigorated leadership, if in my heart I feel I can no longer do the job.’

Lerner has owned a controlling stake at Aston Villa since August 2006, and initially oversaw the club at a time when they were challenging for Champions League places and domestic cup competitions under Martin O’Neill.

However, since O’Neill left prior to the 2010-11 season, success has not been quite so forthcoming, and since current boss Paul Lambert arrived at the club in particular, Lerner has been unwilling to invest heavily n the playing staff at Villa Park.

The American initially released a statement in April stating that he will address his future with the club over the summer, although it is thought that a deal regarding a potential new owner has not yet been done.

Lambert himself faces an uncertain future in the West Midlands after finishing the campaign in 15th place, the same position that he achieved in his first season in charge. The Scot has also stated that the club needs considerable investment over the summer to prevent a sustained relegation battle in 2014-15.
