West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley has revealed that communication problems behind the scenes at the club led to the sacking of Pepe Mel on Monday, writes Sky Sports.

Mel leaves after just four months in charge, during which he won just three out of 17 games as West Brom ended a hugely disappointing season both on and off the pitch just one place and three points above the relegation zone.

The 51-year-old Spaniard replaced Steve Clarke, who was sacked in December, but his short tenure was dogged by persistent rumours of unrest behind the scenes, and McAuley has admitted that several of the players struggled to understand Mel due to the language barrier.

‘One of the big problems was that we had a computer analyst putting his boots on and coming on to the training pitch and trying to coach 20 professional footballers. He was trying to translate for Pepe there," said the Northern Ireland international.

"It was difficult for some players to take. The lads weren't having it all, to be honest. Language has been a big barrier. He'll tell you that himself. We had the frustration of we didn't understand completely what we were being asked to do."

"A big thing we've been missing is honesty around the place. That brings distraction and means people go in a different direction. In a way we were lucky that there were three teams worse than us."
