Rooney desperate for World Cup success

Wednesday 14 May 2014

Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has admitted that earning 100 caps for his country will mean little if he cannot inspire success alongside it, Sky Sports is reporting.

The striker currently boasts 89 caps to his name and is likely to hit the 100 mark later this year, but England’s talisman says that winning something for his country will mean more to him.

England currently have only won the 1966 World Cup and it will be 48 years this summer since they were crowned champions of the World, and Rooney is hungry for success.

He said: “There is no point playing for England 150 times or 100 times if you don’t win anything and then looking back at your caps.

"That number is irrelevant if you have won nothing. That’s the way I look at it. You want to be part of a team that makes history and wins something for England.

"Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to play for your country and it’s a great feeling and an honour but once you are doing it you want to be successful.”

Rooney will be appearing at his third World Cup Finals since bursting onto the international scene during Euro 2004, where he became the youngest scorer in competition history, before being topped just four days later by Swiss youngster Johan Vonlanthen.

And the former Everton man will be hoping to make a big impact with a youthful England squad come June, with England battling Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
