Spain have been dealt a blow ahead of the World Cup with the news that playmaker Thiago Alcantara will miss the tournament through injury, BBC Sport is reporting.

This was set to be Thiago’s first World Cup, having helped the Spain U-21 side win the European Championships in 2013 with a hat-trick in the final against Italy. The 23-year-old has five senior caps to his name.

Coming towards the end of his first season with Bayern Munich after joining from Barcelona, Thiago will also miss the upcoming German cup final with the knee ligament injury, which he suffered from for much of the latter part of the campaign. On Tuesday, he had been named in Spain’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad, but the injury will require surgery.

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed his sympathy for Thiago, saying: "This is bitter for Thiago and I feel sorry for him. A young man who wanted to come back at the World Cup, and suddenly his dreams are burst. We will take care of him now and make sure he is fit at the start of the season."

Spain, the holders, are in Group B at the finals, alongside the Netherlands, Chile and Australia, and are looking to become only the third side to successfully defend the World Cup.
