Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is stepping up his attempts to bring long-term transfer target Fernando to the Etihad Stadium this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Their increased interest in the £20m rated FC Porto holding midfielder comes despite the Financial Fair Play sanctions that UEFA imposed on City on Friday, but the club is determined not to let their punishment affect next season’s ambitions.

Pellegrini sees Fernando as a player that he can build his side around, and one that can make the Premier League champions much tougher defensively in order to make more an impact on the European stage.

There were rumours that Man City would move for Fernando in January along with highly rated Porto teammate Eliaquim Mangala, but a deal did not materialise. This time, due to the FFP sanctions, City are reportedly considering whether to sell Javi Garcia and Matija Nastasic to help raise funds.

The 26-year-old Fernando has been at FC Porto for seven years, helping them to five Portuguese league titles and the Europa League in 2011. Overall, he has made 232 appearances, scoring five goals. He has also been sent off on six occasions.
