Liverpool considering bids for Lovren and Shaqiri
Southampton central defender Dejan Lovren and Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri have emerged as potential transfer targets for Liverpool as they look to bolster their squad over the summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has made strengthening his side’s defence one of his main priorities, after they leaked 50 goals in the Premier League last season. The Northern Irishman is also looking to add quality in-depth as the club prepare for their first season in the Champions League since 2009-10.
Lovren has been a key player in his first season with Southampton, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory at Anfield as he helped the club to a highly respectable eighth-place finish. The Croatia international still has three years left to run on his contract with the Saints, but the prospect of Champions League football could tempt him to move should any bid be accepted.
With the Liverpool owners set to hand Rodgers a large transfer budget, Shaqiri has also emerged as a realistic target, with Bayern reportedly willing to sell for as little as £15m. The 22-year-old, who will represent Switzerland at the World Cup, is often used as a substitute by the German champions, having made just 10 starts in the Bundesliga this season.
