Suarez a doubt for World Cup

According to the Uruguayan media, Luis Suarez has picked up a knee injury in training and could be a doubt for this summer’s World Cup, BBC Sport is reporting.

Tenfield, a Uruguayan broadcaster, has claimed that Suarez will undergo keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage on his meniscus - an area of cartilage that absorbs shock in the knee. Early estimates state that the striker could be out for between two and four weeks.

In September 2012, Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones took 10 weeks to return to action from surgery to his meniscus. As for Suarez, the length of his absence is likely to depend on the damage that is discovered during surgery.

Suarez, last season’s Premier League top scorer with 31 goals, was duo to face England in Sao Paulo on June 19, but it now hangs in the balance. Before that, Uruguay take on Costa Rica on June 14, a game which the 27-year-old is likely to miss. Should he indeed miss out, veteran Diego Forlan could partner Edinson Cavani in attack for the 2010 semi-finalists.
