Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their attempts to sign Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana before the World Cup after the Saints set an asking price of £25m, reports the Daily Star.

Adam Lallana

Brendan Rodgers’ side initially made a bid of £20m for Lallana the day after the Premier League season came to an end, as they looked they looked to complete a deal before the World Cup.

However, the South coast club have made clear that they value their captain at £25m, which is likely to drag out the process, despite England boss Roy Hodgson asking his players to sort out any transfer business before this summer’s tournament.

Lallana, who scored 10 goals in 42 appearances this season and earned his place in the England set-up, is also a reported target for Manchester United.

If Liverpool do not succeed in their pursuit of Lallana, they will turn their attentions to Bayern Munich playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri, who is looking to leave the Allianz Arena for regular first-team football. Lallana’s Southampton teammate, central defender Dejan Lovren, is also a target.
