Man Utd legend Scholes believes van Gaal should sign five or six players at Old Trafford
Former Man Utd star Paul Scholes believes new manager Louis van Gaal will need to sign “five or six” players this summer with Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos an essential purchase, according to BBC Sport.
Scholes believes incumbent Netherlands boss van Gaal faces a “massive task” at Old Trafford, and singled Kroos out for special mention before adding that the 62-year-old should bring in plenty more if the Red Devils are to return to their more familiar territory toward the higher echelons of the Premier League table next season.
Writing in a blog for Paddy Power, Scholes said: “I'd bring in [Bayern Munich's] Toni Kroos, but United need five or six to get near the top.”
Kroos is thought to have already agreed terms on a £20m switch to the former Premier League champions, but other names are being linked, including the likes of Southampton star Luke Shaw and Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas.
Last year’s summer transfer window proved something of a disaster for United, with the club failing in their efforts to sign Thiago Alcantara and Fabregas, eventually bringing in Marouane Fellaini from David Moyes’ old club Everton for £27.5m, in a move that could have seen them save around £4m had they acted just a few weeks earlier before a release clause in the Belgian’s contract expired.
Scholes also stated his opinion that executive vice-chairman of Man Utd, Ed Woodward, needs to put in a good performance this summer in order to prove he can do that job with which he has been entrusted, saying: “Edward Woodward has an awful lot to prove this time that he's good enough at his job. He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants. It's obvious that last year he didn't manage to do that. If he doesn't, we are not going to get anywhere near the top.”
