Chelsea defender Luiz set for £50m PSG switch
Paris St. Germain are ready to make Chelsea’s David Luiz the world’s most expensive defender after opening talks over a £50m deal for the Brazilian, according to the Metro.
Luiz has been the subject of interest for some of Europe’s biggest and richest clubs, but PSG appear to have won the race ahead of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, with talks over a £50m bid having begun with Chelsea on Thursday afternoon.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho is happy to allow Luiz to leave, and will see this deal as fine business for the club. The 27-year-old has not been first choice at Stamford Bridge this season, with Gary Cahill and captain John Terry preferred by Mourinho. As a result, he appeared in only half of Chelsea’s Premier League games.
The former Benfica man joined Chelsea in January 2011, and has helped them to success in the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Europa League. Overall he has scored 12 goals in 143 appearances during his time in West London, and now looks likely to overtake the £30m that Manchester United spent to sign Rio Ferdinand from Leeds United in 2002.
