Arsenal prepare bid for Schalke defender Uchida
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to begin his summer transfer activity with a pursuit of Schalke 04 right-back Atsuto Uchida, according to the Daily Express.
The bid to sign Uchida comes with the impending departure of Bacary Sagna, who has so far refused to extend his contract at the Emirates Stadium and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City.
Wenger is looking to recruit a new right-back before the World Cup, and he sees the versatile Uchida as someone who can help turn his side into one capable of making a sustained title challenge. The Japan international is seen as one of the Bundesliga’s top defenders.
Uchida looks the most likely to move to North London out of a number of candidates to fill the gap vacated by Sagna, a list which included Manchester City’s Micah Richards and Serge Aurier, of Toulouse.
Uchida has been at Schalke for four years, having arrived in the summer of 2010. In that time he has led the club to the Champions League semi-finals in 2011, as well as the knockout stages on two other occasions. Overall, he has made 126 appearances, scoring twice.
