Monday 26 May 2014

West Ham United are set to make their first acquisition of the summer by signing Velez Sarsfield striker Mauro Zarate, Sky Sports is reporting.

Upton Park

Zarate ended the Argentine season as top scorer and scored 20 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions after returning to the club where he began his career. Prior to that he had spells in Italy with Inter and Lazio, scoring a combined total of 37 goals.

The 27-year-old also has some previous experience of playing in the Premier League, having spent the second half of the 2007-08 season on loan at Birmingham City. Despite impressing at St. Andrews and scoring four goals in his 14 games, he was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation by a single point.

The player has now flown over from Argentina to agree personal terms with West Ham and complete a medical, and a source claimed Zarate is keen to join. It said: "Mauro is very excited about a move to England. He enjoyed his spell last time with Birmingham and is ready to play in the Premier League again."
