Tottenham are said to be in “advanced talks” to bring Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino to White Hart Lane, and could unveil the Argentinian as their new boss within 48 hours, according to Sky Sports.

Mauricio Pochettino

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is thought to have wanted Pochettino as deposed manager Tim Sherwood’s replacement ever since the former Blackburn captain was dismissed from the White Hart Lane hotseat at the end of the season, and despite monitoring other potentials such as Ajax boss Frank de Boer and Louis van Gaal before the Dutchman was appointed as David Moyes’ permanent successor at Man Utd, but has had Pochettino at the front of his mind throughout the search for his new manager.

Pochettino was appointed at Southampton following the dismissal of Nigel Adkins in January 2013, and has been credited with much of the improvement at St. Mary’s in that time, particularly for getting the best out of the likes of Saints stars Adam Lallana, Ricky Lambert and Jay Rodriguez to the point of all three being called up the international scene with Roy Hodgson’s England.

Southampton are determined to keep the 42-year-old installed on the south coast, but Spurs are said to be pressing ahead and the prospect of a Champions League challenge, as well as an existing Europa League campaign, may prove too tempting for the former Espanyol boss to resist.

Southampton star James Ward-Prowse recently spoke of how losing Pochettino would be a “major blow”, saying: “All the players love him. He has helped me technically and physically and is a fantastic manager.”

Rodriguez has also praised his manager recently, emphasising his high opinion by saying: “He is unbelievable. I love playing under him.”
