Olivier Giroud is in talks with Arsenal over extending his contract and expects to stay at the Gunners for a while longer, ESPN has reported.

Giroud has two years remaining on his current deal and has said negotiations are underway over fresh terms. The France international striker added that he doesn’t foresee any problems.

“I have two years left on my contract, but we're in talks to extend it,” Giroud said. “For the moment, I'm good here. There are some good things to be done.

“I feel at ease in this league. My first season wasn't too bad, the second was rather good. I hope to do better still. I progress year-on-year, just like the team, which produces great play.”

Giroud added, however, that if Arsenal are to compete for the Premier League title, there needs to be improvements at the club. Last season Arsene Wenger’s team led the way for much of the campaign, only to fall away and finish fourth.

“We were ahead for a good half of the season, and then we cracked,” Giroud lamented. “We lacked maturity; we had a lot of injuries at a tricky time.

“Above all, we weren't able to adapt to the big teams, and we often went off the rails in big games. We have to improve in those matches, perhaps we have to try to play less. But it's hard with the playing philosophy we have.”

Giroud did take some comfort from claiming the FA Cup, however, pointing out that the cup in England means a great deal more than in his homeland. “The cup, it's not nothing in England,” he said. “Especially given the scenario of the final [Arsenal were two goals down to Hull but came back to win 3-2].

“There was a lot of expectation, great fervour among the supporters. It reminded me of what I had when Montpellier won the title.”

Giroud was part of the Montpellier team that claimed the Ligue 1 crown in 2011-12 but Arsenal finished 17 points off the Premier League champions Manchester City. Giroud netted 16 league goals last season, scoring 22 in all competitions from 51 appearances.
