Tiago to make Chelsea return

Chelsea will re-sign former midfielder Tiago on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid, the Daily Mail has reported.

Tiago played at Stamford Bridge in the 2004-05 season, brought to the club at the same time Jose Mourinho was appointed. The 33-year-old later left for Lyon and also had a spell at Juventus before moving to Atletico, initially on loan, in 2010. He completed the move a year later.

It’s speculated by the Mail that Tiago will help Diego Costa bed in to his new club once the striker’s move to Chelsea from Atletico is completed. A £38m move has been mooted for the Brazil born Spain international.

The newspaper adds that Mourinho wants another striker and two defenders - a left-back in particular, with Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno among the names mooted.

Tiago’s last appearance for Atletico would be Saturday’s Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid, should the switch be confirmed. He also helped Diego Simeone’s side to the league title this season, Atleti finishing clear of Barcelona and Madrid.

He made 47 appearances in his first spell in London, picking up a title winner’s medal in the process, as well as the League Cup. With Atletico the Portugal international won the Europa League in 2012, the Copa del Rey in 2013 and the European Super Cup in 2010 and 2013, as well as this year’s success.
