Southampton warn Liverpool and Man Utd over Lallana and Shaw

Southampton have told Liverpool and Manchester United that they won’t be rushed into selling Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, ESPN has reported.

Adam Lallana

The Saints are currently without a manager after Mauricio Pochettino resigned to take over at Tottenham Hotspur, while England pair Lallana and Shaw are catching the eye of the Premier League’s big guns.

Shaw is a target for United and a deal was rumoured to be close, while Lallana was on Liverpool’s radar, but Southampton have stressed that they hold the cards when it comes to outgoing transfers.

“It's very clear that we are in control of all the player transfers. All the top players are under long-term contracts,” the club’s chairman, Ralph Krueger, said. “Any transfers that take place will be under our terms. We will decide the terms to potential transfers in and out of the club.

“We will involve the manager,” Krueger added. “That is important for everybody to know. We have been able to not agree to any transfers to date because we have control of the situation, and anybody who is saying anything else doesn't understand that we are in a strong position. We do not need to [sell anybody].”

Lallana is said to be valued at £20m by Liverpool but Southampton have put a £30m price tag on the captain, while Chelsea are also considering a move for Shaw that could but his fee at £25m.

Krueger also said that he wanted the club’s squad settled well before the transfer window closes at the end of August. “If transfers in either direction are in the best interest of the club, including all factors, then that's what we have to do,” he insisted. “It will be in our mind as to what is best for the Saints and what is the best way for us to build a competitive team for August 16.”

Lallana and Shaw are currently on international duty with England as the Three Lions prepare for the World Cup. They are joined in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Brazil by club colleague Rickie Lambert, with a pre-tournament friendly against Peru to come on Friday.
