Arsenal fail in Juanfran bid
Arsenal have tried for the second time to tempt Juanfran away from Atletico Madrid, only to fail again, Spanish publication AS has reported.
It’s claimed that Arsene Wenger first made an approach for the right-back in 2013 and, despite the Gunners being willing to quadruple his wage packet, Juanfran chose to stay at Vicente Calderon.
Atletico went on to win the Spanish title, seeing off Barcelona and Real Madrid, and reached the final of the Champions League where they lost after extra-time to their city rivals.
Wenger is said to have gone back to Juanfran only a matter of weeks ago and made a renewed bid, but was again rejected by the 29-year-old. AS say that Juanfran feels loyal to Atletico and is happy playing with his current teammates.
Juanfran is part of Spain’s preliminary 30-man World Cup squad but won’t be involved in Friday’s friendly against Bolivia after his exertions in the Champions League final.
He currently has six caps for the World Cup holders, having made his senior international bow in May 2012 against Serbia in a game played in Switzerland. Juanfran travelled to Euro 2012 under Vicente Del Bosque but didn’t take to the field. He scored his first goal for La Roja against Equatorial Guinea in November last year.
