Liverpool are moving closer to signing Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, with talks ongoing over a fee of around £4m plus add-ons, according to BBC Sport.

The Saints have already turned down one offer from Liverpool for their England international front-man, but the Merseyside club are confident they can complete a deal in the coming days, with a medical expected to take place on Saturday, before the England World Cup squad head to Miami for two warm-up games.

Lambert is a lifelong Liverpool supporter, and the Reds are the only club he would consider joining at present, should he leave Southampton, who are now happy to cash in on the 32-year-old. Premier League rivals West Ham United were interested in January, but their bid was turned down.

Southampton were a League One club when they paid £1m to sign Lambert from Bristol Rovers in August 2009. His goals then helped the club to two successive promotions, and he has continued to impress to the extent that he is regularly called up to the England national team.

Liverpool, the Premier League runners-up, are also in talks to sign two of Lambert’s Southampton teammates, with defender Dejan Lovren and captain Adam Lallana both on their radar.
