Newcastle close to signing Montpellier midfielder Cabella

Newcastle are closing in on their first signing of the summer, with the club having “almost agreed” a fee with Montpellier for midfielder Remy Cabella, according to The Chronicle.

Newcastle chased Cabella for much of the last two transfer windows, but are said to be in a better position than before to land their man, with the mooted £7m transfer fee now on the verge of being agreed.

Newcastle have struggled to bring in many new faces in recent transfer windows, and manager Alan Pardew will likely prove relieved at what must be seen as a statement of intent from Tyneside that squad strengthening is paramount to next season’s Premier League campaign.

The club look set to miss out on Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback, who looks good for a move to West Ham, and so the signing of Cabella would be a good early sign that the club are prepared to conduct some serious business this summer.

Should the deal finally be agreed, Cabella would join up with his new team-mates when the transfer window officially reopens on July 1st.
