Gerrard hails Sturridge after England victory

England captain Steven Gerrard has hailed teammate Daniel Sturridge after he opened the scoring in the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Peru on Friday, Sky Sports has reported.

The game was England’s last at Wembley before the World Cup. They now have two more warm-up matches to play against fellow World Cup participants Honduras and Ecuador in Miami, Florida, before they take on Italy in their first Group D fixture on June 14.

After a tepid opening half-hour during which Peru came closer to scoring, Sturridge hit the net with England’s first serious attempt on goal, curling home from the edge of the penalty area. From then on it was comfortable for Roy Hodgson’s men, who added further goals from set-pieces as central defensive duo Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka both found the net.

And after the game, Gerrard was full of praise for his fellow Liverpool star. He said: "It doesn't surprise me. I've seen it all season with Daniel. I think he got big confidence with the manager putting him in his favoured position tonight and I think that goals will do wonders for him.

"If we're to progress in the World Cup then we're going to need Daniel and Wayne (Rooney) to create magical moments and that was certainly one tonight."

On the overall performance, the 34-year-old added: "I thought it was a good test for us. Peru are decent side technically and defended very well - very deep. We had to be patient and wait for the breakthrough, but we're reasonably pleased with where we are at this point. There's still a few things to work on but we've give ourselves a fantastic base to move forward."
