QPR dismiss Lescott rumours

Queens Park Rangers owner Tony Fernandes has dismissed rumours that the club will look to sign Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott when he becomes a free agent, Sky Sports has reported.

Joleon Lescott

Lescott will officially leave Man City at the expiry of his contract on June 30, and in recent months he has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs. Aston Villa and West Ham United in particular are said to be among those looking to claim the signature of the England international.

Victory over Derby County in the Championship play-off final ensured that QPR returned to the top-flight at the first time of asking. They have since been linked with moves for experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard as well as Lescott.

However, Fernandes distanced himself from those rumours and insisted that QPR will take a different approach to the Premier League this time around, having been criticised during their last spell among the elite for signing a number of big-name players who failed to impress on high wages.

The Malaysian businessman said: "I think these are all fantastic players being mentioned but we have brought in players who've been at big clubs before and we got our fingers burned.

We have a different philosophy from this time two years ago. We know what we want, we have a list of targets that we think are the right sort and will add tremendous value to the club.

"You need a balance of youth and experience but you need to get the right experience - people who are ready to come down and battle. People who have come from places like Manchester City, having won titles and been in the Champions League, might not have the right energy you want."
