Hodgson to give England youngsters World Cup chance

Roy Hodgson will give England’s young players the chance to earn a starting role in the World Cup in this week’s friendly against Ecuador, the Guardian has reported.

Raheem Sterling

The likes of Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw are in line to start in the friendly in Miami with Hodgson to name a completely different starting XI from the team that played against Peru on Friday

Peru were beaten 3-0 at Wembley in England’s last home game before the World Cup and with preparations continuing in the United States, Hodgson has offered the likes of Sterling the opportunity to force their way into his plans.

But Hodgson has warned against getting carried away with the Liverpool winger. “[Sterling is] a good player and I’m sure he’s going to be a very big player for England going forward as well, but at the moment I would rather like to see some of these younger players treated with a little bit more caution,” Hodgson said.

“I think it’s very dangerous to start building them up and saying: ‘England are going to do terrifically well because of them.’ There are a lot of other players in our squad who are going to have to take responsibility and hopefully they [the younger players] will come in on the back of it and put the icing on the cake.”

Sterling has played barely more than 50 games for his club but was part of the Liverpool side that finished second in the Premier League last season. He made his first appearance for the senior England side in November 2012, coming on as a substitute in the friendly loss to Sweden, only a few months after breaking in to the Reds’ first team.
