Thierry Henry has backed the decision to award Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger a new contract, Sky Sports has reported.

Henry added that he fully expected the long-serving Frenchman to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium once the FA Cup was claimed with a3-2 win over Hull City. “Knowing Arsene I knew he was going to stay - especially after winning the FA Cup final,” Henry said.

“He loves the club so much that I think it is always going to be difficult for him to leave this club, he signed another three years and hopefully they can be successful,” the former striker added. “You only miss people when they have gone and then you will probably realise what he has done for the club.”

Henry, Arsenal’s record goal scorer, scored 226 goals in 369 games between 1999 and 2007, having joined from Juventus before leaving for Barcelona. He returned to the club for a brief loan spell in January 2012, scoring twice in seven games.

The 36-year-old has been a New York Red Bulls player since 2010, when he left Barcelona. He has netted 45 times in 108 appearances for the MLS club, helping Red Bulls to two victories in the Eastern Conference and the 2013 MLS Supporters’ Shield.
