Costa completes Chelsea medical
Diego Costa’s reported move to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid has moved a step closer as the Guardian claims the Spain international has undergone a medical with the Premier League side.
A fee of £32m has been mooted for the Brazil-born forward after Jose Mourinho pin-pointed Costa as the player to lead the Blues’ forward line. The Guardian adds that Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o scored only 19 goals between them last season; Costa scored 27 on his own for Atletico.
Costa’s goals helped Atletico to the Spanish title as Diego Simeone’s side finished three points clear of both Barcelona and Real Madrid, although Madrid were victorious in the Madrid derby Champions League final. Los Blancos won 4-1 and Costa was substituted inside 10 minutes with a hamstring injury.
The injury occurred during Atletico’s final league game of the season, a 1-1 draw in which they clinched the title at Camp Nou, the home of Barcelona. Costa was included in Spain’s squad for the World Cup despite doubts about his fitness.
Costa scored against Chelsea en route to the Champions League final, netting a penalty at Stamford Bridge in a 3-1 aggregate win for Los Rojiblancos. It’s said that Chelsea were already considering a move for Costa before he played and scored against them.
The 25-year-old has 64 goals in 135 games for Atletico and previously played for Portuguese club Braga and Spanish side Celta Vigo and Albacete, both on loan from Atletico. Atletico later sent Costa to Rayo Vallecano, only to bring him back to Vicente Calderon in 2012.
