Aston Villa set to sign Senderos

Thursday 05 June 2014

Aston Villa are poised to complete the signing of former Arsenal, Everton and Fulham defender Philippe Senderos by the end of the week, the Birmingham Mail has reported.

Philippe Senderos

The 29-year-old, who is part of the Switzerland squad for the World Cup, has undergone a medical with the West Midlands side and a deal should be expected to be completed swiftly. Senderos will join on a free transfer after spending the second half of last season in La Liga with Valencia, making 11 appearances and scoring once.

Prior to that, he spent four years at Craven Cottage, where he found himself in and out of the starting XI, although he was occasionally blighted by injury, just as he was at Everton, where he only made three appearances. During his Arsenal career, he was part of the side which won the FA Cup in 2005.

Senderos is now set to become Paul Lambert’s first signing of what looks certain to be a difficult summer. With Villa having been put up for sale by Randy Lerner, Lambert is only currently able to sign players for free.
