England and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will need three weeks to recover from the knee injury suffered on Wednesday against Ecuador, Sky Sports has reported.

A best-case scenario for Oxlade-Chamberlain would see him able to return in 10 days, but either way it appears England manager Roy Hodgson will be without the 20-year-old for the Three Lions’ World Cup opener on June 14 against Italy.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was injured in a collision with Ecuador’s Carlos Gruezo, and was seen limping away from the MetLife Stadium in Miami after the match. The game finished 2-2 with Wayne Rooney and Rickie Lambert on target for England, although Raheem Sterling was sent off after a tackle on Antonio Valencia, who saw red for his reaction.

England could replace Oxlade-Chamberlain in the squad and as per FIFA regulations, have until before their first fixture to do so. Hodgson said when interviewed after the Ecuador match that he would be disappointed to be without the player. “It would be an enormous blow to lose him. He did ever so well and looked really, really sharp,” he added.
