Mangala ‘would prefer Man Utd move’
FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala would prefer a move to Manchester United over Premier League champions Manchester City, according to the Guardian.
However, new Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal is unwilling to pursue the World Cup bound Frenchman, due to reservations over his temperament. Instead, van Gaal has decided to pursue other defensive targets, including Borussia Dortmund and Germany star Mats Hummels.
Man City have been targeting the highly-rated Mangala for a lengthy period of time, as well as his Porto teammate Fernando. The asking price for the 23-year-old currently stands at around £35m, with manager Manuel Pellegrini seeing him as a potential new centre-back partner for captain Vincent Kompany.
There has also been interest in Mangala from Chelsea, and when previously asked of his preference between the Blues and Man City, he said: “City or Chelsea? Chelsea because it is London. It is true that I love the Premier League because it is a spectacular championship.
In January, there were discussions with City, but it fell through because the two clubs could not reach an agreement. Every player wants to play in the biggest clubs. I am an ambitious player and the team that can help me win titles is the one that interests me.’
Due to Mangala’s stance, Pellegrini may be forced to turn his attentions to other targets, with Roma’s Mehdi Benatia looking the most likely alternative to Mangala.
