Arsenal target Real Madrid goalkeeper Casillas

Arsenal are hoping to persuade goalkeeper Iker Casillas to leave Real Madrid this summer and move to the Emirates Stadium, Football Espana is reporting.

Iker Casillas

Reports in Spain suggest that Arsene Wenger will look to tempt Casillas to North London with guarantees of first-team football. Since the second half of the 2012-13 season, the Real Madrid and Spain captain has lost his place in goal to the in-form Diego Lopez. Instead he has only featured regularly in the cup competitions.

Casillas has spent his entire career at the Bernabeu, and despite his lack of action he is said to be content to remain at the club, although he did consider his future somewhat in the January transfer window. Wenger will now hope to use Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil to help tempt their friend into a move to the FA Cup winners.

It has also been claimed that Casillas’ current contract, which he signed back in 2008, includes terms which state that his salary declines year on year. The 32-year-old has a buyout clause of €180m, while it is likely to take a substantial contract offer to make him leave for the Gunners.
