Chelsea’s Spanish duo, Cesar Azpilicueta and Fernando Torres, have both urged the club to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas this summer, Sky Sports has reported.

Cesc Fabregas

Having initially been heavily linked with Manchester United and former club Arsenal, Fabregas has now emerged as a major transfer target for Chelsea, after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Barcelona, who told the player that he was free to speak to other clubs.

Manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that Chelsea are interested in bringing Fabregas to Stamford Bridge, with Arsenal having confirmed that they will not take up their first option on the 27-year-old, who has been at the Nou Camp for three seasons.

And Torres believes that signing Fabregas is essential for the Blues to succeed next season. He said: "He is a kind of player that Chelsea don't have at the moment. Great players are always great signings. We know him well, he was one of the best players in the Premier League while playing for Arsenal and is a player who brings a lot to the team.

"He is a player who brings ball control and goals. If he feels important, if he feels like a leader he proved at Arsenal that can lead a squad."

Azpilicueta added: "At the moment there's nothing official and he's a Barca player. All I can say is what I already know about him. He's a great central midfielder with plenty of experience in the Premier League. The best players are always welcome at the best clubs. In my personal opinion, he's a special player.’
